Sri Lanka (Ceylon) sapphire prices are up since the beginning of the year. This increase affects also Madagascar material as Sri Lanka dealers, due to the strong connection with Malagasy miners, get the bigger share of the output from the Red Island.
SInce a few weeks, possibly due to the rarity of other gemstones from Nigeria like mandarin garnet (spessartite with "fanta" color), Nigerian dealers bring a lot of sapphires from there, mainly from "Mabila" mine. This material of excellent clarity also known for its dark color except in small stones, is coming in lighter tones. This brings to our market very nice stones in the 2 to 3 carats range, some good stones in 5 carats have been also seen.
We can bet that sapphires from all provenances present regularly on our market like Kanchanaburi, Burma, Pailin (rarely) will follow the Sri Lanka material increase.
