Mr. Bachchan bought tourmaline rough in Bangkok, manufactured it in Jaipur and got big and profitable stones from this rough. His profit made came not only from the quality of the material but mainly from a better yield on the rough.
In Thailand, gem cutters use grinders, In India, for expensive material, they use thin saws to save very small material which is later cut in small to very small stones and, for the lower quality, cabochons or beads.
