It is not subject to irradiation or any kind of improvement. We do not know if this reason makes it a very hot item.
More and more people are looking for safe places to invest in real goods as currencies are becoming a problem. For gemstones as tangible asset, it looks like garnet finally become attractive. Trend started with tsavorite and mandarin. Mandarin, the variety of spessartite in orange "Fanta" color is now difficult to obtain in clean stones over 5 carats and demand is very high. Red color garnets are following the trend and are now in fashion. Prices for this material increased a lot. Rhodolite garnet once discarded reach high prices. Especially in sizes of 10cts up.
Ethiopian opal price increased of 25 to 30% the last 6 months due to the recent ban of rough export from Ethiopia government in order to develop local employment and revenues.
Cutting factories ran by Indians from Jaipur settled in Ethiopia are now in operation and begin to serve Indian market, thus erasing jobs in India… India alone count for 80% of Ethiopia opal exports…
