World economic slowdown have mixed effects on our gemstone market.
Since a few month, medium to high quality gems, mainly emerald in cabochon and bead shapes, where much in demand by some indian investors. They were feeling the arrival of the actual slowdown and wanted to get rid of their stock shares and buy other or safer assets.
Real estate prices were too high to hope to get any profit: construction schemes were starting to see a shortage of buyers. As a result of this demand, high quality gems are now more rare than ever.
I an other hand, many manufacturers are trying to raise cash to face their debts, much of them in these real estate schemes.
As these manufacturers still do not want to layoff employees, we now can see on our market a wide range of low to middle quality material offered at discounted prices. Among them, aquamarine and yellow beryl, tourmaline, sunstone and labradorite in necklaces or cabochons. We even saw lead glass faceted ruby lots, imported from Chanthaburi, offered far below their cutting cost.
Buyers present on the market are taking advantage of this situation and are currently making excellent deals.
